might i recommend, if you have not read it yet, The King In Yellow by Robert W. Chambers. it is an excellent collection of 5 short stories that are all connected by a fictional book. it's from 1895 and was the primary influence behind H.P. Lovecraft's work.
it's a fairly quick read, being only 100 pages or so, but the stories are amazing. particularly the one that takes place in the "future". of course his future is like 1920 or something. i forget. but it makes for a very creepy alternate reality.
Red the Dark Tower book I (with Dani - see my other list). Very cool. Enjoyed it a lot and ordered book II. Thanks for recommending it, by way of some discussion you had on my LJ with Atakra, on my post re: Twilight and Stephen King's opinion of it ;)

Man, why haven't they made a movie of that?
